This is an automatic firmware update for the HP Photosmart camera and requires:

* The dock and A/C power supply that shipped with the camera (not the HP Photosmart 6221 Premium dock).
* The camera be set to "Digital Camera" mode in the USB Setup Menu
* The HP Photosmart software (either Photosmart Premier or Photosmart Essentials) be installed on your Windows PC.

If you cannot fulfill the requirements for this automatic firmware update utility, you should download the manual firmware update. However, it is important to note that a SD card, as well as the dock and A/C Adapter that shipped with the camera (unless your PC/Mac has a SD card slot), are REQUIRED for the manual firmware update procedure.

Installation Instructions

Before downloading this update, check the current firmware version of your camera. To check the firmware version, hold down the flash button on the camera while turning the camera on. This will cause the camera to enter the "Diagnostic Screen". If the firmware version number (reported as "FW 3.04.##" on the LCD display of the camera) is less than 3.04.06 (for example: 3.04.05 or earlier), the camera needs this update. To clear the Diagnosic Screen, turn the camera off.

To use the automatic firmware update, the camera must be in "Digital Camera" mode. To set the USB mode in the camera to "Digital Camera" mode:

1. Turn the camera on.
2. Press the OK button on the camera to enter the Capture Menu.
3. Use the Right/Left arrow buttons on the camera to enter the Setup Menu.
4. Use the Up/Down arrow buttons on the camera to select the USB Menu item, then press the OK button on the camera.
5. Use the Up/Down arrow buttons on the camera to select "Digital Camera", then press the OK button on the camera.
6. Use the Up/Down arrow buttons on the camera to select Exit then press the OK button on the camera to exit the Setup Menu.
7. Turn the camera off.

When you click on the COL17135.exe link to download the firmware update, you can either 'Run' or 'Save' the file. If you select to 'Save' the file, please note the location where the COL17135.exe file is 'Saved' so that you can locate the file using Windows Explorer and double-click on it to 'Run' it. If you select to 'Run' the file (or when you 'Run' the file after saving it), it will create "C:\Program Files\HP R967 FW 3.04.06" and place the firmware update files into that folder and then automatically launch the automatic firmware update utility (HP FirmwareUpdateTool.exe).

Please follow all directions in the update utility or the firmware update will fail. You can run the firmware update utility more than once until the firmware is successfully updated. Once the camera firmware has been successfully updated, you can remove COL17135.exe as well as C:\Program Files\HP R967 FW 3.04.06 and its contents.

NOTE: The automatic firmware update will load the firmware into the memory of the camera, and then instruct you to turn the camera off and on again. When the camera is turned back on, it will then perform the firmware update. When the firmware update completes, the LCD display on the camera will state "Update Complete: Please power-cycle camera".
